International Schools in Taipei: Taipei American School, Morrison Academy, TES and the Rest

Quick Answer: Taipei has a handful of true international schools, led by Taipei American School, Taipei European School and Morrison Academy, and a rule that shapes all of them: students must hold a foreign passport. Here are the schools, the 2026/27 fees and how admission works.

Taipei's international school market is small and clear. Three schools serve most expatriate families: Taipei American School (American, with AP and the IB Diploma), Taipei European School (British, French and German sections) and Morrison Academy (American, Christian). All three publish 2026/27 fees, which run from about NT$600,000 to NT$1,055,000 a year, and all three are bound by the same rule: students must hold a foreign passport. This guide lists the schools, the fees and how admission works. The full list is on our Taipei international schools page.

Who can attend an international school in Taiwan?

Schools registered with the Ministry of Education as schools for international residents may only admit students who hold a foreign (non-ROC) passport. Taipei American School's application instructions require passport copies with the application and the originals at enrolment. In practice a large share of students are Taiwanese families whose children also hold US, Canadian or other citizenship. Families without a second passport look instead at bilingual private schools and experimental education institutions, which sit outside the foreign-school rules and run American-style or bilingual programmes.

TES charges per semester; the annual figures are two semesters. Morrison's annual figure is two semesters of tuition plus two building fees plus the registration fee.

What separates the three main schools?

Taipei American School

Founded in 1949, the largest and most expensive, with a full American programme, a wide AP list and the IB Diploma as an alternative in Grades 11 and 12. Big campus in Tianmu, strong university placement to the US, and waiting lists in the early grades. The one-time capital fee of NT$350,000 is the largest entry cost in the city.

Taipei European School

Three schools in one: the British section runs the English National Curriculum to IGCSE and then the IB Diploma in the shared High School; the French and German sections follow their national curricula. Fees are identical across sections at each stage. The obvious choice for families who want a European route or a European language of instruction.

Morrison Academy

Part of the Morrison Academy system (Taichung, Kaohsiung and Taipei campuses), American curriculum with AP courses and a Christian ethos, at roughly two-thirds of the TAS price. The Taipei campus is in Zhonghe, New Taipei, south-west of the city centre.

How do admissions work?

  1. Passport first. Confirm your child's foreign nationality documents before anything else; without them the registered international schools cannot enrol the child.
  2. Timing. The year runs August to June. Apply in the autumn or winter before entry; TAS reviews applications in rounds and holds waiting lists in Pre-K to Grade 2.
  3. Assessment. School reports for two years, an English assessment, and for older students maths and an interview. TES and Morrison assess English and may require intensive EAL (TES charges NT$90,000 a semester).
  4. Money at offer. Application fee (TAS NT$10,000; Morrison NT$3,500 per test), then the enrolment deposit or entrance fee within days, and at TAS the capital fee before the first day.
  5. Siblings. TES discounts NT$10,000 a semester for a second child; ask each school for its policy.

How does Taipei compare with the region?

At about US$31,000 to US$34,000 a year, TAS sits below Singapore's premium tier (S$53,000 to S$59,000 for the final two years) and above Bangkok's (฿950,000 to ฿1,260,000, roughly US$28,000 to US$38,000). Morrison and TES are close to Bangkok's mid tier. See our Singapore fees guide and Bangkok fees guide for the comparisons, and the Taiwan schools directory for schools in Taichung, Hsinchu and Kaohsiung.

Can Taiwanese children attend international schools in Taipei?
Only if they also hold a foreign passport. Schools for international residents registered with Taiwan's Ministry of Education under the foreign schools rules may admit only students with non-ROC nationality; Taipei American School requires original passports to be shown at enrolment. Families with dual-national children qualify. Bilingual and experimental private schools that are not registered as international schools have no such rule.
