International Primary Schools in Singapore: Entry Ages, Year Group Mapping and 2026/27 Fees
Quick Answer: A child starts British Year 1 at five, US or IB Grade 1 at six, with the 1 September to 31 August birthday window used by most Singapore international schools. Primary tuition for 2026/27 runs from S$24,158 at OWIS to S$49,040 at Stamford American, plus one-off and annual levies. Singapore citizens need an MOE exemption from compulsory education first.
Singapore's international primary schools take children from three or four and place them by birthday, not by grade label: British schools start Year 1 at five, American and IB schools start Grade 1 at six, and almost all of them use a 1 September to 31 August window. Published 2026/27 primary tuition runs from S$24,158 at OWIS Nanyang to S$49,040 at Stamford American, before one-off fees and levies. Singapore citizens need an MOE exemption from compulsory education before they can enrol. This guide covers the entry ages, a year-group mapping table, the fees at 11 named schools and the application timing. Browse every option on our Singapore international schools page.
What age does each curriculum start primary?
Three systems run side by side. British schools (Tanglin Trust, Dulwich, Nexus) start Reception at four and Year 1 at five. Tanglin's eligibility calculator places a child born between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2022 in Year 1 for August 2027 entry, Nursery three years earlier. American and IB schools (Stamford, SAS, CIS, UWCSEA, GESS) start Kindergarten at five and Grade 1 at six; UWCSEA's placement page puts a child born 1 September 2020 to 31 August 2021 in Grade 1 for August 2027 and admits no direct entrants to Grade 12. Singapore's MOE system starts Primary 1 for children turning seven in the year of entry: the 2026 P1 registration exercise covers children born between 2 January 2020 and 1 January 2021, which is why a local Primary 1 child sits alongside Year 2 in a British school. Schools on a January calendar (SJI International, Australian International School) shift the window; check each school's own table before assuming.
How do the year groups map across systems?
The table below follows UWCSEA's published comparison, which is the clearest one issued by a Singapore school.
| Age at start of year | UK / British international | US / IB international | Singapore MOE |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 to 5 | Reception | Pre-K / K1 | Kindergarten 1 |
| 5 to 6 | Year 1 | Kindergarten / K2 | Kindergarten 2 |
| 6 to 7 | Year 2 | Grade 1 | Primary 1 |
| 7 to 8 | Year 3 | Grade 2 | Primary 2 |
| 8 to 9 | Year 4 | Grade 3 | Primary 3 |
| 9 to 10 | Year 5 | Grade 4 | Primary 4 |
| 10 to 11 | Year 6 | Grade 5 | Primary 5 |
| 11 to 12 | Year 7 (secondary) | Grade 6 (middle school) | Primary 6 |
Two practical points follow. A family arriving from the UK should expect the same year label; a family arriving from the US or Australia will see their child's grade number stay the same but the age band shift by a year against the British schools. And the British primary phase ends at Year 6 (age 11) while the American one ends at Grade 5 (age 11), so both hand over to secondary at the same age despite the different numbering.
What do the primary years cost in 2026/27?
Figures are the schools' own published annual tuition for the first primary year and the last, inclusive of 9% GST, checked in September 2026. One-off fees are application plus enrolment plus any capital or facility fee. Annual levies are charged every year on top.

Extras to budget: EAL where the school's assessment requires it (S$9,100 to S$14,900 a year at Stamford, S$9,500 at CIS for Grades 1 to 10), buses (S$670 to S$2,687 a term at UWCSEA) and lunch. Devices are supplied in the primary years at Tanglin and UWCSEA.
Can Singapore citizens enrol?
Not without permission. Under the Compulsory Education Act, MOE requires every Singapore citizen born after 1 January 1996 and living in Singapore to attend a national primary school unless an exemption is granted. The international school applies for the exemption once it has offered a place, which is why citizen applicants are usually processed in a later round; Tanglin's admissions page flags the "additional considerations" for citizens. Permanent residents and pass holders face no such rule. The wider context, including the exemption categories MOE lists, is in our guide to international schools in Singapore.
When do you apply, and what does entry involve?
Apply a year ahead for Year 1 or Grade 1 and earlier for Nursery. Tanglin takes applications up to three years before entry and warns that beyond Nursery places depend on withdrawals; UWCSEA opens 2027/28 applications on 1 September 2026 and asks for a single-campus or dual-campus application fee. The process is the same everywhere: online form, passport and pass copies, recent school reports, then a play session for the youngest and an assessment for older children (SJI International charges S$250 for a virtual one). Offers come with an enrolment fee due within days (Nexus gives seven) and, at the British schools, a capital levy. Shortlist three, visit on a normal school day, and ask what happens to a child who is new to English or who arrives mid-year, because that is where the primary years differ most between schools.
Frequently asked questions
- What age do children start international primary school in Singapore?
- It depends on the curriculum. British schools such as Tanglin Trust and Dulwich start Year 1 for children who turn five between 1 September and 31 August of the entry year; American and IB schools such as Stamford and UWCSEA start Grade 1 at six with the same birthday window. Most schools take children from three or four into Nursery or K1, and UWCSEA's placement table shows a Singapore MOE Primary 1 child (age six to seven) maps to UK Year 2 and US Grade 1.
- Can a Singapore citizen attend an international primary school?
- Only with an exemption. Under the Compulsory Education Act every Singapore citizen born after 1 January 1996 and living in Singapore must attend a national primary school unless MOE grants an exemption, and the school applies once it has offered a place. Tanglin's admissions page notes that additional considerations apply to citizen applicants. Permanent residents and foreigners enrol freely.
- How much does international primary school cost in Singapore in 2026/27?
- Published tuition for Year 1 or Grade 1 runs from S$24,158 at OWIS Nanyang and S$35,770 at GESS to S$45,375 at Tanglin, S$45,240 at Dulwich and S$49,040 at Stamford American. Add one-off entry fees of roughly S$4,000 to S$13,000 and, at some schools, annual levies: S$9,537 in year one at UWCSEA, S$7,291 at OWIS, S$6,130 at GESS, S$3,000 at XCL, S$2,000 at Nexus.
- When should I apply for a primary place?
- A year ahead for the popular entry points, earlier for Nursery. Tanglin accepts applications up to three years before the entry year and says demand exceeds places beyond Nursery, and UWCSEA opens applications for 2027/28 on 1 September 2026. Schools on a January calendar (SJI International, AIS) run a separate cycle.
- Which international schools in Singapore take children from age three?
- Most of the large schools run a nursery or pre-kindergarten: Tanglin (Nursery, age three), Dulwich (Toddler and Nursery), Stamford (Pre-Nursery), Nexus (Nursery), GESS (Pre-Kindergarten), XCL (Nursery), AIS (Pre-Nursery) and SJI International (Kindergarten 1). UWCSEA starts at K1 for four-year-olds. Fees for these years are lower, from S$21,080 for a half-day Nursery place at Dulwich.
- Is British Year 1 the same as Singapore Primary 1?
- No. British Year 1 is for five-year-olds and Singapore's MOE Primary 1 takes children aged six to seven, so a child moving from a British international school to a local school steps back roughly a year in label, not in age. UWCSEA's age and grade table maps age six to seven to UK Year 2, US Grade 1 and MOE Primary 1.
