International Schools in Geneva: Fees, Curricula and the Geneva vs Lausanne Question

Quick Answer: Geneva's international schools charge roughly CHF 19,300 to CHF 37,500 a year in 2026-27, plus registration and capital fees in year one. The canton's public schools are free but teach in French from the first year. Here is what the main schools cost, why the IB started here, and where Lausanne actually works out cheaper.

Annual tuition at Geneva's international schools runs from about CHF 19,300 in pre-school to CHF 37,500 in the final IB year for 2026-27, before registration and capital fees that can add CHF 4,000 to CHF 6,500 in year one. The free alternative is the canton's public system, which teaches in French from the first year. This guide covers why Geneva has so many international schools, what the main ones charge, where the IB came from, and whether Lausanne is any cheaper. Start with our directory of schools in Geneva and the wider list of schools in Switzerland.

Why does Geneva have so many international schools?

Demand comes from the size of the international workforce. The official International Geneva facts and figures count 42 international organisations, permanent missions from 186 states and 497 non-governmental organisations in the canton, employing 36,908 people in 2025. The canton's population of 537,191 is 41.7% foreign and covers 196 nationalities. Families posted for three to five years want a curriculum their child can continue elsewhere, which is why the city supports British, French, Swiss and IB tracks side by side rather than one dominant system.

What do Geneva's international schools charge in 2026/27?

These are annual tuition figures from each school's own published 2026-2027 schedule, checked in September 2026.

The entry costs matter as much as the headline. Ecolint charges a CHF 250 application fee, CHF 2,500 registration and a one-time CHF 4,000 capital development fee. Geneva English School charges CHF 250 on application, CHF 1,500 registration, CHF 2,000 capital development at registration and a further CHF 2,000 after a year, plus a CHF 3,000 tuition deposit refunded at the end. The British School of Geneva sets its capital development fee at CHF 3,000 with an annual registration fee of CHF 1,045. Collège du Léman asks CHF 500 on application, CHF 3,800 admission and a CHF 600 security deposit for day pupils; full boarding is CHF 117,500 a year on top of an admission fee of CHF 4,800 and a CHF 6,000 deposit. Our guide to how international school fees are built sets out the pattern.

Is the Swiss public school a realistic alternative?

For most residents, yes, and it costs nothing. Cantonal law makes primary school compulsory for every child resident in Geneva who has turned four by 31 July, under article 55 of the Loi sur l'instruction publique. The cantonal education department's primary school handbook is blunt about the cost: schooling is free and the child is issued with textbooks, exercise books and stationery.

The catch is language. Teaching follows the Plan d'études romand, and the department's 2025 handbook shows French as the language of schooling from the first year, German added in 5P and English only in 7P. A child arriving at nine with no French can be placed in a support class and will usually catch up; a child arriving at fifteen, two years from an exam, usually cannot. That timing question, rather than money, is what pushes most families into the fee-paying sector.

Where did the IB come from?

Geneva. Ecolint's own history records the school opening on 17 September 1924 with eight students, founded by local educators together with officials of the League of Nations and the International Labour Organization, which makes it the first international school anywhere. In 1968 the IB Diploma Programme was, in the school's words, largely created by Robert J. Leach and other teachers at the Ecole Internationale de Genève. That is why the IB is the default senior qualification across the region and why so many Geneva schools run it alongside a national track. If you are weighing the diploma against the alternatives, read the IB compared with A Levels and AP and Cambridge against the IB.

Is Lausanne cheaper than Geneva?

Not at the top. The International School of Lausanne publishes 2026-2027 tuition of CHF 28,490 for Reception 4, CHF 29,300 for Years 1 to 6, CHF 33,630 for Years 7 to 9, CHF 36,555 for Years 10 and 11 and CHF 39,380 for Years 12 and 13, plus a one-off acceptance fee of CHF 5,000 for a first child, according to its published fee schedule. That final-year figure is higher than any Geneva school in the table above.

Lower down the school it is a different story. Collège Champittet in Pully quotes 2026-27 day fees, including mandatory activities, of CHF 24,670 for Grades 1 and 2, rising to CHF 33,980 in Grade 12 and CHF 38,260 in Grade 14, with a CHF 2,500 admission fee, on its fee page. So Lausanne primary can undercut Geneva primary by several thousand francs a year, while the senior years cost the same or more. Housing, commuting and the size of the local job market are better reasons to pick one over the other than the fee table. Compare the two directly using our Lausanne school list.

Frequently asked questions

How much do international schools in Geneva cost?
Published 2026-2027 annual tuition runs from about CHF 19,300 for pre-school at Geneva English School to CHF 37,500 for Grades 11 and 12 and the IB at Collège du Léman. Ecolint charges CHF 28,160 for Classes 1 to 4 and CHF 36,540 for Classes 12 to 13; the British School of Geneva charges CHF 23,450 in Reception and CHF 32,450 in Years 12 and 13. Registration and capital fees are extra.
Is public school free in Geneva?
Yes. Primary schooling in the canton of Geneva is compulsory for every resident child who has turned four by 31 July, under article 55 of the Loi sur l'instruction publique, and the cantonal education department states that schooling is free and that pupils are issued with textbooks, exercise books and stationery. Parents supply only personal items such as slippers, a painting apron and sports clothes.
What language are Geneva public schools taught in?
French. The cantonal primary handbook for 2025 sets out the Plan d'études romand, in which French is the language of schooling from the first year, German is added in 5P and English in 7P. Schools provide support classes for newly arrived pupils who do not speak French. The practical question is age: the younger a child arrives, the easier the switch into a French-medium classroom.
Was the IB invented in Geneva?
Effectively, yes. The International School of Geneva records that the IB Diploma Programme was largely created in 1968 by Robert J. Leach and other teachers at the Ecole Internationale de Genève. The school itself opened on 17 September 1924 with eight students, founded by local educators with officials of the League of Nations and the International Labour Organization, making it the first international school anywhere.
Is Lausanne cheaper than Geneva for international school?
It depends on the year group. Collège Champittet in Pully quotes 2026-27 day fees of CHF 24,670 for Grades 1 and 2, below primary tuition at Ecolint or Geneva English School. But the International School of Lausanne charges CHF 39,380 for Years 12 and 13, more than any of the Geneva schools compared here. There is no consistent Lausanne discount at senior level.
What fees do Geneva schools charge on top of tuition?
Expect an application fee of CHF 250 to CHF 500, a registration fee, and a one-off capital development fee for building works. Ecolint charges CHF 250, CHF 2,500 and CHF 4,000. Geneva English School charges CHF 250, CHF 1,500, CHF 2,000 at registration and CHF 2,000 a year later, plus a refundable CHF 3,000 tuition deposit. Collège du Léman charges CHF 500, CHF 3,800 and a CHF 600 deposit for day pupils.
How many international organisations are based in Geneva?
The official International Geneva figures list 42 international organisations, permanent missions from 186 states and 497 non-governmental organisations in the canton. Together they employed 36,908 people in 2025, roughly one in ten jobs in the canton. That concentration of mobile, fixed-term employment is the main reason Geneva supports so many fee-paying schools running several national curricula at once.
