The 10 Best Music Schools in England 2026: Why Guildhall Leads
England has six specialist conservatoires and a handful of world-class university music departments, and in 2026 one of them stands apart on the independent evidence. Guildhall School of Music & Drama is ranked third in the world for performing arts and in the top four for music in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, and holds a Gold rating in the Office for Students' Teaching Excellence Framework. This guide ranks the ten best music schools in England, says what each is for, and explains how to apply.

How were the schools ranked?
Two external measures and one editorial one. First, the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, the only global ranking that covers performing arts and music as subjects. Second, the Office for Students' Teaching Excellence Framework 2023, which rated English providers Gold, Silver or Bronze on student experience and outcomes. Third, what each school is known for: its strongest departments, facilities and location.

Why is Guildhall number one?
The rankings
Guildhall's own announcement of 25 March 2026 quotes the QS result: third in the world for performing arts, up from fourth in 2025, top four for music, and the second-highest ranked UK institution in both subjects. In the TEF 2023 exercise, in which 46 providers across England were rated Gold, Guildhall was one of them.
The building
Guildhall sits on Silk Street inside the Barbican estate, next to the Barbican Centre and the home of the London Symphony Orchestra. Students rehearse and perform in professional halls and share a campus with the school's drama and production arts departments, so a music student can work with actors, stage managers and sound designers without leaving the building.
Recent outcomes
The Fibonacci Quartet, formed at Guildhall, received a 2026 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship worth £20,000 to support its international career. The school publishes a running list of alumni appointments to orchestras, opera houses and West End productions each term.
What are the other nine schools best at?
2. Royal Academy of Music
Founded in 1822, England's oldest conservatoire and Guildhall's closest rival. Its teaching faculty draws from London's orchestras, and its museum holds one of the world's important collections of stringed instruments. Strong across classical performance, composition and jazz.
3. Royal College of Music
Opposite the Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington. The Centre for Performance Science, run jointly with Imperial College London, makes it the place for students interested in the research side of performance as well as the playing.
4. Royal Northern College of Music
Manchester's conservatoire, founded in 1973 from two older colleges. Known for brass and wind, a large popular music programme, and a city with a live music economy of its own.
5. Trinity Laban
Formed in 2005 from Trinity College of Music and the Laban dance centre, based in Greenwich. The only English conservatoire that trains musicians and dancers together, with well-regarded jazz and contemporary streams.
6. University of Oxford
An academic music degree taught through the colleges, with the choral foundations, college orchestras and the Holywell Music Room as the performing life around it. For students who want musicology, analysis and composition at the core.
7. University of Cambridge
Similar in shape to Oxford: a rigorous academic course, world-famous college choirs, and the Cambridge University Musical Society for orchestral and choral performance.
8. Royal Birmingham Conservatoire
Part of Birmingham City University. Its purpose-built home opened in 2017, the newest conservatoire building in the country, and its opera and jazz departments are the standouts outside London.
9. University of Leeds
A broad school of music covering classical performance, popular music, music technology and music psychology, in a city with a strong live scene.
10. University of York
Known for composition, electronic and computer music, and ethnomusicology. The right fit for students whose interests run beyond the Western classical canon.
How do you apply, and when?
The six conservatoires recruit through UCAS Conservatoires, a separate application service with an autumn deadline for music courses and an audition fee per school. Auditions run from November to February and can be live or recorded. Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds and York are applied to through the main UCAS undergraduate scheme, with Oxford and Cambridge closing in mid-October. Whichever route, applications for September 2027 entry open in the summer of 2026, so the audition programme should be settled by then.
Guildhall's own application information, prospectus and open days are on the school's study-with-us pages. For pre-college preparation, see our guide to the Guildhall summer school, and browse other specialist schools in our United Kingdom schools directory.
Frequently asked questions
- Which is the best music school in England?
- On the two independent measures that exist, Guildhall School of Music & Drama: third in the world for performing arts and in the top four for music in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, and rated Gold in the Office for Students' Teaching Excellence Framework 2023. The Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music are the closest rivals, and the best choice for an individual depends on instrument, teacher and genre.
- What is the difference between a conservatoire and a university music degree?
- A conservatoire (Guildhall, RAM, RCM, RNCM, Trinity Laban, Royal Birmingham) is a performance-led school: one-to-one lessons on your instrument, ensembles and public performance make up most of the week, and entry is by audition. A university music department (Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds, York) is an academic degree with musicology, analysis and composition at the centre and performance as one strand. Choose by what you want to spend four years doing.
- How do I apply to a conservatoire in England?
- Through UCAS Conservatoires, a separate service from the main UCAS scheme, with an earlier autumn deadline for music courses and an audition fee per school. You submit recordings or attend live auditions between November and February. Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds and York are applied to through the main UCAS route instead.
- Do I need Grade 8 to get into a conservatoire?
- There is no formal grade requirement at most conservatoires; the audition decides. In practice successful undergraduate applicants perform at or above Grade 8 standard with distinction-level technique and musicianship, and many have played in county or national youth ensembles.
- Is Guildhall only for classical musicians?
- No. Alongside classical performance it runs jazz, electronic and produced music, composition, and the drama and production arts departments in the same building, which is why it is ranked for performing arts as a whole rather than music alone.
- What have Guildhall graduates achieved recently?
- The Fibonacci Quartet, formed at Guildhall, received a 2026 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship worth £20,000 to develop its international career, and the school's alumni pages list recent appointments to UK and European orchestras and West End productions each season.
