Tsukuba International School
Tsukuba, Japan
Tsukuba International School (TIS) is an independent IB World School in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, offering Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 education to an internationally diverse student body. Founded in 1992 in response to the growing need for English-based international education in the Tsukuba Science City area, TIS has grown to become a vital educational institution for the multinational research and technology community centered around the University of Tsukuba and RIKEN. As an authorized IB World School since May 2017, TIS offers the IB Primary Years Programme and is preparing the Middle Years Programme, creating a continuum of internationally accredited education. Instruction is conducted entirely in English, serving students from approximately 30 nationalities whose parents work at international research institutes, universities, and technology companies throughout Tsukuba and the greater Ibaraki region. The school serves children from age 3 through Grade 12, approximately age 18. TIS benefits from Tsukuba international atmosphere, with families from JAEA, KEK, NIMS, and other world-class research institutions forming a uniquely academic parent community. The school fosters inquiry-based learning, intellectual curiosity, and cross-cultural understanding.
