Sri Sumangala College Panadura
Panadura, Sri Lanka
Sri Sumangala College Panadura, established in 1890, is one of Sri Lanka's historic Buddhist schools and a prominent institution in the Western Province coastal town of Panadura — famous for the landmark 1873 Panadura Vadaya (Great Debate), a public religious debate between Buddhist scholar Migettuwatte Gunananda and Christian missionaries that became a catalyst for Sri Lanka's Buddhist revival. Named to honour this Buddhist intellectual heritage, Sri Sumangala College offers Sri Lanka national O-Level and A-Level programmes from Primary through Sixth Form. The school has over 130 years of tradition producing Western Province coastal region professionals, academics, and community leaders. Sri Sumangala College is known for its academic achievement, sports (particularly cricket), and Buddhist cultural education. The school's historic connection to the Panadura Vadaya gives it special significance in the story of Sri Lankan Buddhist education and national identity. The campus features science laboratories, a library, sports grounds, a Buddhist shrine room, and school facilities. Graduates regularly gain admission to Sri Lanka's national universities.
