Lycée Pétion

Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Lycée Pétion is the oldest secondary school in Haiti, founded in 1816 in Port-au-Prince, named after Alexandre Pétion — one of Haiti's founding fathers and the first President of the Republic of Haiti. As one of the premier public lycées in Haiti, the school carries over 200 years of educational history and has shaped generations of Haiti's intellectual, political, and cultural elite. Following the Haitian national curriculum with French as the medium of instruction, Lycée Pétion prepares students for the Baccalauréat and for university entrance in Haiti and internationally. The school is located in downtown Port-au-Prince and has been a center of Haitian intellectual life for two centuries, associated with philosophers, poets, politicians, and scholars who have defined the Haitian national identity. Despite the challenges of earthquakes, political instability, and social upheaval, Lycée Pétion endures as a symbol of Haitian educational aspiration and the nation's commitment to learning.
