Lycée Alexandre Pétion
Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Lycée Alexandre Pétion is one of the most historically significant and prestigious public secondary schools in Haiti, founded in 1816 and located in Port-au-Prince. Named after Alexandre Pétion, the first President of the Republic of Haiti, the school has shaped generations of Haitian leaders, intellectuals, physicians, attorneys, and politicians over its more than 200 years of history. The school provides secondary education following the Haitian national curriculum overseen by the Ministry of National Education, offering a rigorous academic programme in sciences, humanities, languages, and mathematics. Students aged approximately 12 to 18 attend the school, preparing for the national baccalauréat examinations. The school is located in downtown Port-au-Prince and is one of the largest and most attended government lycées in the country. Despite challenges from natural disasters including the 2010 earthquake, Lycée Alexandre Pétion has continued to serve as a beacon of public education and national identity in Haiti.
