Hiroshima Global Academy

Osakikamijima, Japan

Hiroshima Global Academy (HiGA) is a unique public international boarding high school operated by Hiroshima Prefecture, located on the scenic island of Osakikamijima in the Seto Inland Sea. HiGA is the only prefectural IB World School in the Chugoku region and one of only a small number of Japanese public schools fully implementing the International Baccalaureate curriculum. Opened in April 2019, the school serves students from grades 7 through 12, approximately ages 12 to 18, in a boarding environment designed to cultivate globally minded leaders. HiGA is an authorized IB World School offering both the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme, with all IB subjects taught in English. Hiroshima Prefecture established HiGA as part of its strategy to develop globally competitive human resources and to attract international academic talent to the region. The school is committed to accepting both domestic and international students, with a portion of places reserved for overseas applicants. Set on the tranquil island environment of Osakikamijima, surrounded by the beautiful Seto Inland Sea, HiGA provides students with a distinctive boarding lifestyle that emphasizes community, resilience, and environmental stewardship alongside rigorous IB academics. The school is accessible by ferry from Hiroshima Port and is well-supported by Hiroshima prefectural government resources.
